Statement on arson attack at East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation

The Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) is sickened by the recent attack at the Albert Street Synagogue in East Melbourne.

The attack challenges the fundamental values that underpin our diverse and inclusive Victoria, where people from all backgrounds are welcome and respected.

We stand with the Jewish community – and with Victorians across the state – who are appalled by violence and division, and who seek instead to foster and promote harmony and unity.

There is no place in our state for acts of violence, intimidation or hate speech.

The VMC will continue in its efforts to work across communities to promote cohesion, call out hate and division, and strengthen the ties and values that underpin multiculturalism.
