Statement from the Multifaith Advisory Group

A message to residents of the North Melbourne and Flemington public housing estates.

Friday 31 July 2020 6:28am

Greetings of peace!

The Victorian Multicultural Commission Multifaith Advisory Group met on 28 July 2020 and we would like to send you a message of love, support and encouragement.

You met some of us in recent weeks whilst others have held you in our prayers and meditations. We hope you continue to feel loved and supported. We all empathise with you and wanted to reach out through this message.

It must have been frightening and stressful to have your home called unsafe - especially after all you have been through. Additionally, we recognise that this sudden burst of publicity about your circumstances has opened many eyes to issues that need to be better addressed.

Freedom from fear and feeling safe, is what we all want for our loved ones and for ourselves. In the period ahead, with careful listening and working with you, we hope we can help ensure your quality of life is all that we understand by the Golden Rule of all our faith traditions - that you feel treated as we all hope to be treated.

For many of you celebrating Eid ul Adha, we also send warm greetings during this very special occasion, especially during these socially distanced circumstances. Your understanding and patience in refraining from the customary way of celebrating is widely appreciated and we hope this ensures a joyful and safe Eid next year with family and friends.

For now, please accept our short message and know that it comes from our hearts.
