The Victorian Multicultural Commission is shocked by the attack on a Sikh Gurdwara in Kabul, Afghanistan, which took the lives of 25 innocent people including children and injured many others.
We express our deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones and to Sikh communities in Afghanistan and around the world.
We strongly condemn all acts of violence including those fuelled by religious prejudice.
This tragedy has come at a time when Sikh communities are about to celebrate Vaisakhi which marks the beginning of the new year in Sikhism.
This attack is not reflective of the true teachings of either the Sikh faith or the Muslim faith, which both promote the unity and oneness of humankind.
At a time when people of all cultural and faith backgrounds around the world are struggling to fight Coronavirus (COVID-19), we must be united against all prejudices.
We must show compassion for all people and support each other through this challenging time.
Our hearts and prayers are with everyone affected by this senseless attack.
